With your Session Worksheet completed and your Session Targets picked, it is time to use the Virtual EMDR Session Tool.
During your session, you will be using the Virtual EMDR Session Tool two separate times-First for a longer period of time while you mentally focus on your predetermined Targets and Negative Beliefs (this is called Desensitization) and then briefly a second time where you will substitute Positive Beliefs and emotionally pleasant mental images to focus on-EMDR therapists call this Installation.

To begin, access and use the Virtual EMDR Session Tool for 5-10 minutes, taking breaks regularly as needed. As you become more experienced with EMDR, and if you find the sessions are working well for you, you may choose to extend your sessions for longer periods of time. It is up to each individual to figure out what is comfortable for them.
During the Desensitization phase, you will carefully focus on your Targets and Negative Beliefs while you watch and listen to the EMDR Session Tool.
This may cause old or long forgotten memories may surface. Continue to just focus on the tones and moving light-there is no wrong way to react to the new stimulus.
Allow your mind to drift to any memories, thoughts, feelings, or images related to your Targets.
When you are ready, you will turn on the Virtual EMDR Session Tool to begin. First set the session tool to Full Screen mode, then adjust the other settings to your preference and begin.
For the duration of your session, listen to the audio tone as it moves from ear-to-ear and follow the moving visual object closely with your eyes while at the same time mentally focusing on your Targets and Negative Beliefs.
Becoming proficient at using the EMDR Session Tool may take some practice-don't be surprised if you feel awkward or uncomfortable during your first few sessions. Stick with it and the results will follow.
As you become more experienced at using the EMDR Session Tool, you can complete longer sessions and experiment with different settings.
*People undergoing EMDR treatments sometimes report experiencing strong, overwhelming, or powerful negative emotions during their session. If this happens, and you feel you need a break, you should stop your session and take a few deep relaxing breaths to help you come back to the present. If the emotions brought about by EMDR are too overwhelming, you may want to turn off the EMDR Session Tool and end your session for the day. Try again on another day.
