FEARS/PHOBIAS/ANXIETY SAMPLE TARGETS
Sometimes there is no direct situation or event that causes the anxiety and fear we are feeling. In fact, these negative feelings have become so much a part of who we are on a daily basis that they almost seem normal. This does not have to be the case-these feelings can be eliminated with regular EMDR sessions.
TARGETS- Try to look behind the fear and anxiety at what is really bothering you.
NEGATIVE BELIEFS- Behind most general fear and anxiety there are associated Negative Beliefs. Here are some examples:
POSITIVE BELIEFS- This is your chance to Install Positive Beliefs that will eliminate the fear and anxiety you are feeling:
FEAR OF PUBLIC SPEAKING
ANDREW- Andrew has been put in charge of a large company training which will include employees from around the country. In order to complete the job, he will need to give a complete interactive presentation in front of nearly 500 co-workers. The problem is that he is filled with gut-wrenching fear when he thinks about standing in front of all those people.
TARGETS-Targeting a fear of public speaking is simple and direct:
NEGATIVE BELIEFS- For a Fear of Public Speaking, the Negative Beliefs tend to circulate around feelings of failure and shame about your fear. Examples:
POSITIVE BELIEFS- The Positive Beliefs associated with a Fear of Public Speaking generally are visualizations of the better life you can have without your fear.
NATASHA- Natasha lives in a smaller town out side of the city limits. In order for her life to function, she has to go to the market to buy food and also do things like walk with her daughter to school. Unfortunately she has a horrible fear of going out into open and public locations. She wants to get past her phobia so she can enjoy a better quality of life.
TARGETS-Targeting agoraphobia is simple and direct:
NEGATIVE BELIEFS- With agoraphobia, the Negative Beliefs tend to circulate around feelings of failure and shame about your fear. Examples:
POSITIVE BELIEFS- The Positive Beliefs associated with agoraphobia generally are visualizations of the better life you can have without your fear.
FEAR OF FLYING
KIM- Kim has avoided getting on an airplane for more than 10 years. She is looking for a new job opportunity and she has been offered to interview with a great company. Unfortunately it’s halfway across the country in Chicago. The company wants to meet her and has bought her a plane ticket for next month. She feels absolutely terrified at the idea of getting on an airplane.
TARGETS- Targeting for a fear of flying is pretty straight forward.
NEGATIVE BELIEFS- For Fear of Flying, the Negative Beliefs are almost always associated with the life limitations your fear causes. Here are some examples:
POSITIVE BELIEFS- For a Fear of Flying, the Positive Beliefs are generally associated with visualizing the better life that flying can provide you with.
There are many types of phobias, some of the most common are a fear of spiders, fears of snakes, or a fear of social situations. Whatever your phobia is, focus on specific situations involving it as your EMDR Session Targets.
TARGETS- Target a specific image of whatever your phobia is.
NEGATIVE BELIEFS- The Negative Beliefs for phobias are almost always directly tied to the life limitations your phobia causes.Here are some examples:
POSITIVE BELIEFS- For a phobic behavior are generally associated with imagining a better life free of your phobia.
