I) SESSION PREPARATION
IV) ENDING YOUR SESSION
-FINDING YOUR TARGETS
After the initial discovery of EMDR in the 1980s, therapists quickly recognized that an important part of the brain reprogramming process was to end each EMDR session with the Installation of a set of Positive Beliefs.
Research shows that EMDR type therapies can quickly change the brain’s acceptance of new belief patterns. This means that the old, ingrained negative emotional patterns get replaced with a new ability to overcome your problems.
The old, repetitive brain message causing your compulsive behaviors, fears, anxieties, grief or traumas fades back into the recesses of your mind and is replaced by a new positive and strong message that prompts you to feel better-often with little effort after 5-10 sessions.
EMDR therapists call this part of an EMDR session Installation. The goal here is to mentally strengthen the Positive Belief until your brain accepts it as being true.
Go back and use the Virtual EMDR Session Tool for up to five more minutes-this time, as a substitute, mentally focus on the Positive Beliefs you identified on your Session Worksheet-focus instead on how you would like things to be instead.
Imagine as specifically as possible seeing yourself in the future living the exact life you want.
Imagine anything happy, joyous, or positive-being with your children and family, doing an activity that you love, or maybe living the life you have always wanted. Imagine being completely free of the chains of your traumatic issue, fear, or emotional problem.
Go back and use the Virtual EMDR Session Tool for up to five minutes now. When you are finished, go to IV) ENDING YOUR SESSION.
